Surgical Training and Education

Our surgeons provide pre-eminent health sciences professional education and research opportunities, and advanced surgical training to other surgeons through UC San Diego School of Medicine.

    bullet Department of Surgery, UC San Diego School of Medicine

    Founded in 1965, the Department of Surgery is heavily involved with continuing education for surgeons and physicians, both nationally and internationally. We play a major role in teaching throughout all four years of UC San Diego School of Medicine curriculum. We have five highly distinguished ACGME residency programs, seven fellowship programs, and research programs across numerous surgical specialties.

    UC San Diego Health’s orthopedic residency program is ranked in the top 10 percent nationally. In addition, the department’s spine fellowship program is nationally recognized as one of the best in the country.

    bullet Department of Urology, UC San Diego School of Medicine

    UC San Diego Health’s urology program is ranked among the nation's best in adult and pediatric urology. We offer fellowship training in urologic oncology, pediatric oncology, uro-gynecology and sexual medicine.

    bullet Department of Neurosurgery, UC San Diego School of Medicine

    Our residency program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of modern neurosurgery, including neurosurgical critical care, neurotrauma, neurovascular surgery, brain tumors, functional neurosurgery, epilepsy, pediatric neurosurgery, peripheral nerve, and spine/spinal instrumentation surgery.

    Our gastroenterology program strives to be nationally recognized through its faculty as well as innovations that will improve the care of patients with gastrointestinal and liver diseases nationwide.

    The nephrology-hypertension residency program at UC San Diego School of Medicine offers numerous and diverse clinical, translational and basic research activities.

    bullet Department of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery, UC San Diego School of Medicine

    The UC San Diego Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns and Acute Care Surgery Research Laboratory is focused on studying the injury response. Our research group consists of an integrated team of surgeon-scientists and PhD researchers who share a common goal of performing leading-edge basic science and translational studies.

    The Center for the Future of Surgery is a state-of-the art facility dedicated to catalyzing novel surgical technologies, techniques and teaching methods to advance safety and innovation in today's operating rooms.

    Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences trains students seeking PharmD or PhD degree, and provides continuing education for practicing pharmacists.
