Orthopedics Research and Clinical Trials

UC San Diego Health’s surgeons and scientists work side by side to advance orthopedic and sports medicine care. Our scientists are exposed to the most important clinical problems and empowered to study them. At the same time, our surgeons are provided with the most modern tools available to prevent, study or repair injured tissue. Some of our current research topics include:

  • The use of biologic medications to regenerate injured and diseased tissues
  • The use of antiinflammatory and other medications to alter disease processes and heal tissues
  • Diagnostics to understand injury severity in muscle, tendon, ligament and bone
  • The role of rehabilitation in injury prevention and recovery
  • Exercise interventions to improve health and prevent type 2 diabetes
  • Computational modeling to improve post-surgical repair
  • Creation of novel intraoperative tools to assist surgeons during procedures
  • Creation of novel sensors to monitor recovery after injury or surgery
  • Tracking outcomes in standard and experimental interventions in our patients
