Hamstring Tendonitis or Strain

UC San Diego Health's sports medicine physicians provide expert diagnosis and treatment of hamstring tendonitis and strain. We can help you develop a progressive, targeted stretching program to resolve current problems and prevent recurrent ones. Physical therapy may be advised, as well.

What is hamstring tendonitis or strain?

The hamstring muscles are the muscles in the back of the thigh that allow the knee to bend (knee flexion). The hamstring muscles turn into tendons as they come down and attach at the back of the knee. They can get tight and inflamed. This can cause a hamstring muscle strain, which is pain at the back of the thigh. It can also cause pain behind the knee. Hamstring issues may be triggered by excessive recent activity. They may also occur without any predisposing trauma. Some people have tight hamstrings for a long time without knowing it.

What are the symptoms of hamstring tendonitis?

Hamstring tightness can lead to pain in the knees, hips, thighs and even the back.

How is hamstring tendonitis or strain diagnosed?

Hamstring tendonitis and strain are diagnosed by a doctor. The diagnosis will be based on the patient's symptoms and a physical exam.
