UC San Diego Health offers free injury screenings to high school student athletes. You do not need an appointment, but student athletes must have a high school ID and be accompanied by a parent or guardian to receive care.
These injury screenings are held weekly during the fall at our sports medicine clinic in La Jolla. The dates and times for the fall 2019 injury screenings will be posted on this webpage this summer.
Injuries Requiring Referral or Emergency Care
Cheerleader Gets Back in Action Thanks to Saturday Injury Screening
Cheerleader Shannon Webster's knee injury was diagnosed at a free Saturday screening for high school athletes.
Injury screenings are for common injuries that occur during play. We may not be able to fully treat some injuries and may recommend a comprehensive physician evaluation, X-rays or MRI. The athletic trainer at your school can provide a referral card with all of the necessary information.
If you believe your injury is serious, do not wait for a clinic. The emergency room is usually the safest and most immediate place to receive care for serious acute injuries. We also offer
same-day urgent care and
walk-in services for common urgent orthopedic injuries.
Other Services for Student Athletes
Sports physicals: We offer free sports physicals to San Diego Unified Student athletes yearly. These physicals include all elements required to participate in sports for the academic year. We also provide optional concussion baseline testing and sports health and wellness educational presentations. Our next pre-participation sports exam event will be held in 2020 at
San Diego High School.
On-site certified athletic trainers: We provide on-site,
athletic trainers to high schools. Athletic trainers have extensive training in preventing and caring for athletic injuries and illnesses at all levels of sport including high school, university, and professional ranks. They collaborate with our physicians to provide clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, preventive services, and rehabilitation for acute and chronic injuries and medical conditions.
Concussion evaluation: We can connect you with
athletic trainers and sports physicians who have expertise in evaluating sports concussions. Our team is trained in the current standards of sports concussion assessment and return to play protocol required by California state law, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and the San Diego Unified School District policy. Most concussions will require follow-up care before you can return to competition. We can expedite referral to our Concussion Clinic for comprehensive and trusted return to learn and play management.
