Kidney Transplant

The lives of more than 60 people changed forever thanks to one special donor and Facebook.

Established over 45 years ago, the kidney transplant program at UC San Diego Health was the first academic program in San Diego County and the first to perform kidney transplantation.

Our transplant experts are leaders in innovative research and sophisticated surgical techniques for kidney transplantation, as well as minimally invasive robotic surgery for kidney removal from living kidney donors.

We are dedicated to providing comprehensive care for transplant recipients and living donors, before, after and during transplantation.

Living Kidney Donation

Part of the National Kidney Registry's Paired Exchange Program, we have the unique ability to allow donors who are not blood or tissue compatible to "exchange" their kidney with a donor who is compatible. Our team can also help coordinate with donors who reside outside of the U.S. Learn more about living kidney donation.

About Kidney Transplantation

Our team saves lives every day while taking on some of the toughest, highest-risk cases. Learn the ins and outs of the kidney transplant process, including how to get on the national waiting list. Learn more about kidney transplantation.

Kidney Autotransplantation

We are one of the few programs in Southern California that perform kidney autotransplants. The procedure is useful in treating patients with kidney diseases including loin pain hematuria syndrome and nutcracker syndrome, who have debilitating pain and bloody urine. By removing the kidney and placing it behind the pelvic bone, pain can be relieved.
