Davinci Robotic Surgery at UCSDThe UCSD section of Minimally Invasive Surgery is directed by Santiago Horgan, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in robot-assisted surgery and other minimally invasive surgical techniques. Formerly the Division of General Surgery, the expert surgeons in the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery use laparoscopic techniques, specialized equipment and at times robotic assistance, are able to make tiny, precise movements through very small incisions.

What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Video laparoscopic surgery, which debuted in the late 1980s, made it possible for surgeons to operate by inserting a tiny video camera and several thin instruments the size of chopsticks through a few small incisions, while viewing the surgical field on a computer monitor.
