Edward Junkins, MD, MPH
Executive Director, Student Health and Well-Being
Edward Junkins, MD, MPH, serves as executive director of Student Health and Well-Being at UC San Diego, where he leads a comprehensive network of health and wellness services designed to support the Triton community. In this role, Dr. Junkins works collaboratively across UC San Diego Health, Student Affairs, and with other campus partners to deliver innovative, inclusive and high-quality student health services.
Dr. Junkins oversees the integration and expansion of clinical and mental health services for the UC San Diego student body. He also leads the continued development of services within the Triton Center and the student mental health app. To enhance strategic, student-centered health and well-being collaborations, Dr. Junkins also serves as a Student Affairs Leadership Team member.
He brings over two decades of experience as a health sciences academician, clinician and executive administrator. Before joining UC San Diego, Dr. Junkins served as associate medical director for University Health Services at UC Berkeley, where he led clinical operations, strategic planning and quality improvement initiatives. Prior to that, he was director of University Health Services at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana.
A passionate educator, Dr. Junkins has trained and mentored future clinicians and health leaders at the intersection of medicine, equity and public health. He has held multiple leadership roles in medical education, including senior associate dean at Western University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine Northwest, and associate dean of Student Affairs and assistant dean of Diversity and Community Outreach at the University of Utah School of Medicine.
While living in Oregon, Dr. Junkins was appointed by the governor to serve as vice chair of the Joint Task Force on Universal Health Care. His past elected service includes terms on the Corvallis School Board and the Corvallis City Council, and leadership roles in several local foundations and community organizations.
He completed his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital Children’s Center and received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his fellowship training and master of public health from the University of Utah School of Medicine and holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Junkins is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine.
