Environmental Characteristics
- Dynamic and Fast-Paced: L&D units are never the same. You'll encounter a range of situations, from stable, routine vaginal births to complex emergencies like C-sections and pre-term deliveries.
- High-Stakes Environment: You're responsible for the well-being of both mother and baby, often in critical and emotionally charged situations.
- Teamwork-Oriented: You'll collaborate closely with physicians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other nurses to provide the best possible care.

Unique Demands/Qualities Needed
- Patient Assessment: Continuously monitor the mother's vital signs, fetal heart rate, and progress of labor.
- Medication Administration: Administer medications as ordered, including pain medications (like epidurals), and medications to prevent complications.
- Assisting with Deliveries: Provide hands-on support during vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
- Postpartum Care: Monitor the mother and newborn after delivery, assist with breastfeeding, and provide education on newborn care.
- Emergency Response: Be prepared to respond quickly to unexpected complications.
- Patient Education: Provide education and support to patients and their families throughout the entire birthing process.
