Progressive Care Units (PCU) Cardiac Nurse Externship Program

Environmental Characteristics

  • Fast-paced and challenging: PCUs care for patients who are sicker than those on a medical-surgical floor but not critical enough for the ICU. This requires constant vigilance, quick thinking, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations.
  • Variety of patients: Heart Failure, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Interventional Cardiology, etc.
  • Focus on monitoring and interventions: PCU nurses closely monitor patients' vital signs, administer medications, and provide interventions such as:
    • Cardiac monitoring: Identifying and responding to arrhythmias
    • Respiratory support: Assisting with breathing treatments, managing oxygen therapy
    • Wound care: Managing complex wounds and dressings
    • Pain management: Administering pain medications and assessing pain levels
  • Strong emphasis on patient education: You'll play a crucial role in educating patients and their families about their condition, medications, and discharge instructions.
