Progressive Care Units (PCU) Medical / Surgical Nurse Externship Program
Environmental Characteristics
- Fast-paced and challenging: PCUs care for patients who are sicker than those on a medical-surgical floor but not critical enough for the ICU. This requires constant vigilance, quick thinking, and the ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations.
- Variety of patients: Surgicial interventions for acute or chronic conditions.
- Focus on monitoring and interventions: PCU nurses closely monitor patients' vital signs, administer medications, and provide interventions such as:
- Cardiac monitoring: Identifying and responding to arrhythmias
- Respiratory support: Assisting with breathing treatments, managing oxygen therapy
- Wound care: Managing complex wounds and dressings
- Pain management: Administering pain medications and assessing pain levels
- Strong emphasis on patient education: You'll play a crucial role in educating patients and their families about their condition, medications, and discharge instructions.
