November 17, 2005  |

The upcoming PBS "Scientific American Frontiers" program on memory, called “Don’t Forget,” features several UCSD School of Medicine faculty members.

Program host Alan Alda visited San Diego last fall to interview a number of San Diego experts on memory loss. The program, airing Tuesday night, May 11 at 10 p.m. on KPBS-TV, focuses on the work of Dr. Larry Squire and Dr. Igor Grant of the UCSD School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs Medical Center Department of Psychiatry, and Dr. Mark Tuszynski of the UCSD School of Medicine Department of Neurosciences.

The segment about Dr. Tuszynski’s research will feature a San Diego woman who participated in his recent clinical trial, which tested the safety of gene therapy as an approach to slowing the cell degeneration that underlies memory loss in Alzheimer’s disease patients. Dr. Squire's work with patient "E.P." whose hippocampus was destroyed by a viral infection will be discussed; and a segment on the families of Alzheimer’s patients will include Dr. Grant's observations about caregiver stress.

In addition to the Tuesday night premier, the program will air Wednesday, May 12 at 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., and Sunday May 16 at 5 a.m. KPBS-TV can be seen on Channel 15/Cable Channel 11.
