Barbara Parker, M.D., named Medical Diecotor of Oncology Services at Moores UCSD Cancer Center.

In her new position, Parker will focus on ensuring that the highest quality patient care and service are provided through UCSD’s outpatient and inpatient cancer services.  As the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and one of only 39 in the nation, the Moores UCSD Cancer Center offers leading edge diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to treating malignancy, combined with a nationally respected research effort focused on improving the prevention and treatment of cancer.  UCSD’s cancer programs were named among the top 40 in the nation in this year’s U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” edition.

“With her dedication to excellent clinical care, an impressive background in clinical and basic research, and a deep commitment to her patients, Dr. Parker is the ideal choice to lead our oncology services.  She will ensure that we are delivering the best possible care and widest array of options to our patients,” said Richard Liekweg, Chief Executive Officer, UCSD Medical Center.

Parker, who specializes in breast cancer, is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina.  While earning her M.D. at Stanford University School of Medicine, she pursued additional research training through the Medical Scientist Training Program of the National Institutes of Health.  She completed her residency at UCSD, serving as Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine, and completed a fellowship in the Division of Hematology/Oncology before joining the faculty.

She has been selected by a vote of the San Diego Medical Society as one of San Diego’s “Top Doctors,” and this year received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.  She is a member of UCSD’s Academy of Clinician Scholars.
