February 13, 2007  |

Riders are invited to sign up now for the fourth annual “Ride4AIDS,” a one-day HIV/AIDS benefit bike ride along San Diego’s scenic waterfront, which will be held Sunday, April 1A.  Proceeds from the ride will go to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine’s AIDS Research Institute (ARI) and to Being Alive San Diego, a non-profit support and service organization for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Participants are offered three options with three different starting times:

The 10-mile flat route starts at 9 a.m. from Spanish Landing and Harbor Island to Seaport Village and back.

The 25-mile route, starting at 8 a.m., includes the 10-mile route with the addition of a hilly bike loop up to the Cabrillo National Monument and back.

The 50-mile route, starting at 7 a.m., includes mixed terrain as cyclists travel to Cabrillo National Monument, Mission Bay, up to the UCSD/Torrey Pines area and back.

A 10-mile time trial is included in the 25- and 50-mile rides, or can be ridden as a single event.

Fees for the bike ride are $25 for 10 miles, $30 for 25 miles, and $35 for 50 miles; $10 less for riders age 8 to 17.  The fee for participation in the 10-mile time trial portion only is $25.

Registration information is available at or by calling 619-291-1400.

The UCSD AIDS Research Institute
In 1996, the ARI was established to coordinate the diverse AIDS research and clinical activities on the UCSD campus.  Housed within the School of Medicine at UCSD, the ARI serves as a regional resource for HIV and AIDS research and information in the San Diego area.  The mission of the ARI includes coordinating and stimulating collaborative scientific research and exchange within the academic community, offering relevant educational and training opportunities in the many areas related to HIV infection, and providing clinical resources and education to the San Diego community.  By coordinating and promoting scientific research and exchange within the academic community and the industrial sector, as well as providing clinical resources and education to the community at large, ARI members strive to halt the spread of HIV/ and AIDS through cutting-edge research, innovative clinical trials and public education.  For more information about the UCSD ARI, call 858-534-5545.

Being Alive San Diego
Being Alive San Diego is a non-profit organization and service provider that works to enrich and enhance the personal dignity and quality of life of people living with AIDS and HIV through mutual support, access to information, public advocacy and social interaction.  More than 3,000 individuals are assisted each year.  For additional information about Being Alive San Diego, call 619-291-1400.
