UC San Diego Department of Radiology Opens New Advanced Imaging Center in La Jolla

February 07, 2008  |

On February 3, 2008, UC San Diego Department of Radiology opened a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) center in La Jolla. Called UCSD Imaging Center at La Jolla, the new center is open to the public and offers access to the university’s world-renowned radiology faculty.

“This facility will be a convenient site for referring physicians and patients to access the advanced radiology expertise of UCSD School of Medicine,” said William Bradley, M.D., PhD., F.A.C.R., chairman of the department of radiology at UCSD School of Medicine. “Patients and their doctors will be able to receive the highest quality diagnostic services with easy access and same-day scheduling.”

Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive procedure that produces a detailed two-dimensional view of an internal organ or structure such as the brain, heart and spinal cord. Radio waves and a powerful magnet linked to a computer are used to create these images which can show the difference between normal and diseased tissue.

“Patients will be able to access state-of-the art imaging techniques developed by UC San Diego which are not widely available to the public,” said Stephen M. Dorros, M.D., medical director of UCSD Imaging Center at La Jolla. “These techniques are important to the timely and accurate diagnosis of orthopedic and sports injuries as well as diagnosing the progression of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, liver dysfunction, and neurological disorders.”

UCSD School of Medicine radiologists will supervise and interpret the MRI readings using the latest MR techniques and image acquisition technology. Stat and preliminary readings, as well as final dictated reports, will be available the next day.

Located at 8929 University Center Lane, Suite 101, UCSD Imaging Center at La Jolla offers patients same-day scheduling access, friendly experienced staff, and free on-site parking. For more information or for a consultation, call 858-457-4227.
