UC San Diego School of Medicine today announced the appointment of Thomas E. Jackiewicz as new CEO of the UC San Diego Medical Center, effective November 23. Jackiewicz will be responsible for the management of the Medical Center, which comprises UC San Diego Medical Center- Hillcrest, Thornton Hospital, Moores UCSD Cancer Center, Shiley Eye Center and the Sulpizio Family Cardiovascular Center, scheduled for completion in 2011.
Jackiewicz, 51, joined UC San Diego Health Sciences in 2001, most recently serving as associate vice chancellor and chief financial officer.
“My goal with this appointment is to maintain the strong momentum and growth we have within the Medical Center and I know that Tom possesses the leadership abilities to build upon our track record of success.” said David Brenner, MD, vice chancellor of Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.

During his career, Jackiewicz served as associate vice chancellor and chief financial officer for Health Sciences at UC San Diego, chief operating officer of Columbia University Medical Center, senior associate chair for finance and administration at the Stanford University School of Medicine, director of finance and administration for Oregon Health Sciences University and director of business and financial operations at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
Jackiewicz is also a member of the UC San Diego Foundation Board. He has served as the National Chair of the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Business Affairs and is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the University Health System Consortium.
Jackiewicz earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia and his Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Management from Columbia University. He has extensive administrative and financial management experience in Health Sciences administration and physician practice operations.
