A triathlon aimed at raising money for cancer research at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center will be held Sunday, May 3 at South Shores Park on Mission Bay, beginning at 7 a.m. Now in its second year, the Spring Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon, the first multi-sport event of the season in San Diego, is for competitors at all levels.
The Sprint Triathlon consists of a ¼-mile swim, nine-mile bike race and three-mile run. The Super Sprint Triathlon is shorter, with a 200-meter swim, six-mile bike race and 1.5-mile run, and is perfect for the novice triathlete. Those who would rather not swim may want to compete in the Duathlon, which is a one-mile run, a nine-mile bike race and a three-mile run.
All of the money raised at the event will go to support cancer research and the efforts of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center’s Clinical Trials Office.
The theme of the day is “personal best.” Medical oncologist Tony Reid, MD, PhD, director of the Moores UCSD Clinical Trials Office and the event founder and organizer, said that he created the Triathlon last year with this theme because he wanted to recognize the efforts of patients experiencing cancer. “Patients are trying their best to deal with their cancer, and they have victories and setbacks, just like athletes who compete,” he said.
This year’s event is “sold out,” though there are a few spots still open for the main race. The event organizers are holding 50 places for late registrants. Those competing in the “Personal Best” category will follow the elite athletes who make up the first wave of competitors. This category celebrates those who have or who are doing their personal best in living with cancer. Individuals can still register for this category on Saturday, May 2 at Hi Tech Bikes, 7638 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego, CA 92111, from 10:30 am to 3 pm or on Sunday morning the day of the race.
