New location brings research, discovery and convenience to community

Patients in San Diego’s North County coastal area now have access to the region’s only top-ranked academic health system, with the convenience of being close to home.  UC San Diego Health System North Coastal Cardiology is now open at 477 North El Camino Real Road, Suite D300, in Encinitas.

The new location provides North County patients with convenient access to general cardiologists as well as cardiac specialists and a range of clinical trials to treat heart diseases.

“We want our patients in North County to be able to access a clinic such as this in the area where they and their physicians live, so they can get their day-to-day care and longer term care in their own community,” said Ehtisham Mahmud, MD, FACC, co-director of the UCSD Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center.

UC San Diego Health System North Coastal Cardiology includes general cardiologists and heart rhythm specialists, and will be able to treat commonly encountered and complex heart conditions. Cardiac testing, including echocardiography, stress testing and blood work will be also available at this location.  Ajit Raisinghani, MD, is medical director of the Encinitas clinic, serving with top cardiovascular physician-researchers including Gregory Feld, MD, Navinder Sawhney, MD, and Pam Taub, MD.

“This clinic symbolizes our commitment to bring the kind of innovation and quality of care that we provide at the university out into the community,” explained Tom McAfee, MD, dean for clinical affairs, UC San Diego Health Sciences.  “We welcome this collaboration with the community and want to extend our commitment to you and let you know that we’re here to stay.”

Andy Phemister, Executive Director of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce, along with Encinitas Council Member Jerome Stocks, welcomed UC San Diego.   “I want to thank UC San Diego Health System for investing in the City of Encinitas,” said Stocks.  “This represents quality improvement for the health care options available to the people of the surrounding community.”

UC San Diego Health System North Coastal Cardiology is the latest step in a comprehensive care plan that culminates with the opening of the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center in April 2011.  This new 128,000-square-foot facility will unify UCSD’s ambulatory, clinical, and inpatient heart and stroke care in one convenient location.
