Elisabeth C. McLemore, MD, recently joined UC San Diego Medical Center and Moores UCSD Cancer Center as an assistant professor of surgery. McLemore specializes in colorectal and gastrointestinal surgery, surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery with a focus on colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
McLemore plans to initiate a series of clinical trials to evaluate the surgical treatment of fistulizing Crohn’s disease and timing of colectomy in patients with aggressive ulcerative colitis. This effort would complement existing clinical trials available at UC San Diego Medical Center for the medical management of IBD.

McLemore’s specialties include laparoscopic and robotic gastrointestinal surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery and colonoscopy. Her clinical interests include the surgical management of colon, rectal and anal cancer, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, hereditary colon cancer syndromes, familial polyposis syndromes, diverticulitis, fistulas, and rectal prolapse.

Ramamoorthy, MD, assistant professor of surgery. “Her expert training from Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic, specifically in IBD and endoscopic microsurgery, adds a new dimension to our colorectal program at UC San Diego Medical Center.”
Prior to her arrival, McLemore was a colorectal surgeon at the Pasadena Colon and Rectal Medical Group, Inc. in Pasadena, California. She earned her Doctor of Medicine at University of Virginia School of Medicine after graduating from University of California Irvine with a double major in biological sciences and chemistry. McLemore completed her residency in general surgery at the Mayo Clinic-Arizona in Phoenix, followed by a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic-Florida.
McLemore is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery, eligible. She is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Medical Association and Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Additionally, she has authored several articles, book chapters and abstracts, and has received numerous awards, most recently America’s Top Surgeon for 2008.
