Dilip V. Jeste New President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association

Dilip V. Jeste, MD – Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging, Director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging, and Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine – has been elected by his peers across the country as the President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association (APA.)  The APA has close to 38,000 members and is the oldest medical organization in the United States – three years older than the American Medical Association (AMA).

Jeste is expert on successful aging and geriatric psychiatry, and is a world authority on late-onset schizophrenia. A member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, he is included on the Institute of Scientific Information list of the “world's most cited authors,” comprising less than 0.5% percent of all publishing researchers of the last two decades.
 
He was a research fellow, and later, Chief of the Units on Movement Disorders and Dementias at the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH) before coming to UC San Diego in 1986.

His term as president-elect of the APA will begin in May at the conclusion of the APA Annual Meeting when President-elect John Oldham, MD, begins his one-year term as president. Dr. Jeste will become president in May 2012.

Jeste obtained his MBBS degree from the BJ Medical College, Pune, and medical degree (MD) in psychiatry from Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai. He will be only the fourth international medical graduate, and the first individual from outside of North and South America or Europe to preside over the organization. In the United States, Jeste completed his psychiatry residency at Cornell University and neurology residency at George Washington University.

Director of the Advanced Center for Innovation in Services and Intervention Research at UC San Diego, funded by the NIMH, he is the principal investigator on numerous research and training grants, and has published ten books and more than 600 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books.

Jeste is past president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry. He was also a member of the National Mental Health Advisory Council as well as Council of Councils of the National Institutes of Health. He is the editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, has been listed in “The Best Doctors in America,” and has received many of the top research awards in his field.

Jeste lives in La Jolla, with his wife, Dr. Sonali Jeste, who is a child psychiatrist.
