Candis Morello, PharmD, CDE

She earned her bachelor’s degree from UC Davis in 1991 and her PharmD degree from UC San Francisco. Following completion of her pharmacy practice residency at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, Morello practiced at both the VA and the Naval Medical Center San Diego where she established innovative multidisciplinary ambulatory care clinics to improve the care of patients with diabetes. In 2002, she became a founding faculty member at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy where she has been instrumental in advancing student pharmacist education, student participation in professional society activities and community outreach efforts. In addition to her administrative efforts as Associate Dean, Morello will continue teaching in the capstone Pharmacy Practice and Therapeutics courses and maintain her clinical practice in diabetes management and research program at the VA Healthcare System.

Pieter Dorrestein, PhD, associate professor at UCSD’s Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and a member of the department of chemistry-biochemistry, has been named the 2011 recipient of the Matt Suffness Award by the American Foundation for Pharmacognosy (AFP). Pharmacognosy, the area of pharmaceutical chemistry devoted to natural products, began with a focus on plant sources, but has expanded to marine species and to microbial products from marine, aquatic and terrestrial species. The award is named after the late program director at the National Cancer Institute, Suffness, who played a prominent role in the development of the anti-cancer drug taxol which was initially derived from the Pacific yew tree. Dorrestein's research is directed to understanding the panoply of compounds emitted from microbes to control their surrounding environment, and communication with neighboring microbes. Dorrestein received the award at the AFP’s annual conference, recently held in San Diego.

Charles E. Daniels, RPh, PhD, Associate Dean of the UCSD Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacist-In-Chief of UC San Diego Health System, has been elected Correspondants etrangers (Foreign Correspondent) by the Academie nationale de Pharmacie in France.  Foreign correspondents are chosen from among those who have distinguished themselves in work with the academy.  Daniels, nominated for his work in hospital pharmacy, will receive the honor in Paris in December.
