Nuance Data Breach Includes 619 UC San Diego Health Patients

June 28, 2018  |

UC San Diego Health has informed 619 patients that they may have been included in an external data breach involving Nuance Communications (“Nuance”), a third-party medical transcription provider.

Nuance has reported that an unauthorized party accessed one of Nuance’s medical transcription platforms between November 20, 2017 and December 9, 2017.

Notification to patients was delayed at the request of federal law enforcement. The investigation determined that a former Nuance employee breached Nuance’s servers and accessed the personal information of 45,000 individuals of which 619 were UC San Diego Health patients.

According to Nuance, the law enforcement investigation determined that no information was further misused or disclosed and all data has been recovered.

UC San Diego Health is committed to maintaining the privacy of our patients. UC San Diego Health patients who have received a notification letter may contact the UC San Diego Health Privacy Office toll free at 877-476-8273.
