UC San Diego School of Medicine was named one the nation's top residency programs in the West.

“One of the most important functions of our academic health system is residency training for the next generation of physicians. The outstanding training of our residents guarantees great future physicians for San Diego and beyond,” said David A. Brenner, MD, vice chancellor for Health Sciences and dean of the UC San Diego School of Medicine.

UC San Diego School of Medicine placed in the top 10 for residency training in the West in the following specialties: internal medicine, anesthesiology, dermatology, obstetrics & gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, pediatrics, psychiatry, radiology (diagnostic) and surgery. More than 900 post-graduate trainees, including interns, residents and fellows, train at UC San Diego each year.

“UC San Diego Health Sciences’ 118 training programs promote the value of service to others, high quality medical education and research, commitment to excellence in patient care and teaching as well as development of lifelong learning skills and personal well-being,” said Sherry C. Huang, MD, professor of pediatrics and acting associate dean for Graduate Medical Education.

Huang added that UC San Diego provides an environment in which resident physicians develop extensive personal, ethical, clinical and professional competence under careful guidance and supervision to assure a work ethic that puts patients –and their safety –first.

To fulfill its tripartite mission of clinical care, research and education, UC San Diego Health Sciences is composed of clinical and academic entities. UC San Diego Health System, the region’s only academic health system, has been ranked #1 in San Diego for four consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. It comprises UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest and UC San Diego Thornton Hospital, Moores Cancer Center (one of only 41 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the country), Shiley Eye Center, Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center and Jacobs Medical Center (opening 2016) in La Jolla, as well as other primary and specialty practices located throughout Southern California.

Established in 1968, UC San Diego School of Medicine is consistently ranked among the top research-intensive medical school programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report and, in 2014, had the ninth highest National Institutes of Health total funding of 136 schools of medicine in the United States. Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences opened in 2000 as the only public school of pharmacy in the region, and the second in the state of California.

Medical students and physicians can access the full list of residency programs by specialty using the free Residency Navigator tool on Doximity.
