The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) is pleased to announce that UC San Diego Health has earned 2019 CHIME HealthCare’s Most Wired award as a certified level eight organization. The Most Wired program conducts an annual survey to assess how effectively health care delivery organizations apply core and advanced technologies to improve health and care in their communities.

“UC San Diego Health has strategically deployed multiple technologies to support the delivery of high-value patient care, achieve meaningful efficiency, and effectively analyze data to continually improve performance,” said Brian Clay, MD, Chief Medical Information Officer, UC San Diego Health.

UC San Diego Health’s level eight certification is recognized as a Quality Award under the prestigious Most Wired program which evaluates the use of technology in multiple areas, including clinical quality and safety, interoperability, population health, patient engagement, and analytics and data management.

“Technological advancements and integration projects at UC San Diego Health have occurred across multiple geographical locations in conjunction with an overall regional expansion to improve access to same-day and specialized care for patients,” said Clay.

For example, UC San Diego Health has enabled video visits and sharing of clinic notes through its MyChart patient portal. Video visits enable rapid same-day care for patients seeking primary care. The improved Epic electronic health record (EHR) facilitates the collection of all medical records on a patient, even those from outside UC San Diego Health. Additionally, the Epic EHR has been enhanced to improve clinical quality and safety by creating clinical care pathways that assure consistency of care across patient populations and practice locations.

A total of 16,168 organizations were represented in the 2019 Most Wired program. The surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in healthcare organizations at all stages of development, from early development to industry leading.

“We are proud to note that all five University of California health systems earned Most Wired recognition this year, supported in part by multiple UC-wide collaborative working groups that have been coordinating improvement efforts,” said Christopher Longhurst, MD, Chief Information Officer, UC San Diego Health.

“Health care organizations across the globe are continually striving to raise the standard of care, pushing themselves and their peers to do better,” said Russ Branzell, CHIME president and CEO. “We designed Most Wired to identify and share those leading practices so everyone can benefit. It is an honor to be among those that perform at the highest levels, knowing that the excellence they achieve will impact patients for years to come.”
