Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research
With the passage of Proposition 64, California joins seven other states (Alaska, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington) and the District of Columbia that have fully legalized the medicinal and recreational use of cannabis.
Physicians and scientists at the
Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) at UC San Diego Health have been actively studying cannabis since 2000. CMCR is home to numerous programs and clinical trials that evaluate the effect on cannabis and cannabinoids on various aspects of health and living, such as pain management and daily activities like driving. The legalization of recreational cannabis raises new interest and concerns.
Beginning January 1, 2018, both medicinal and recreational cannabis will be available for sale in California to all persons 21 years and older. Recreational cannabis will be available for sale through licensed stores via the CalCannabis Cultivation Licensing, a division of the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
