Inpatient Psychiatric Care

UC San Diego Health offers patients and families inpatient services within a fully staffed medical and surgical hospital. Being in the hospital is helpful for people who need the highest-level of psychiatric care. We also provide a caring and compassionate environment.

Our inpatient services include:

  • A neuropsychiatric and behavioral medicine unit: This is a locked, 18-bed, self-contained area. The unit provides comprehensive and intensive therapeutic services for adults with severe functional and organic psychiatric disorders. The primary focus of this unit is to provide treatment for emergent symptoms. It also prepares patients for follow-up treatment in a less restrictive setting. We emphasize maximum patient engagement and active problem solving. We also embrace a comprehensive approach to treatment and recovery that includes mental health, social and medical care services.
  • A geriatric inpatient unit: We offer a highly respected Senior Behavioral Health program. It provides inpatient care in a comfortable, safe setting. Our facility is specially designed for the needs of older adults with acute mental health disorders. Our care teams include nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and pharmacists, with expertise in geriatric care. Admission is voluntary and available only to adults 65 and older for short-term treatment. Older adults with sub-acute psychiatric problems or those who need transitional care from an inpatient setting may want to consider treatment through our Senior Behavioral Health Intensive Outpatient Program.
