Second Opinions for Cancer Care

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a confusing and overwhelming experience. Seeking out a second opinion can give you peace of mind and a comprehensive review of all your care options. In some cases, an evaluation from another physician can provide additional information and reveal additional treatment possibilities.

A second opinion can be worthwhile at any point in your cancer journey, but it is particularly valuable if:

  • You have been newly diagnosed and would like a physician with subspecialty expertise in your cancer type to weigh in on your current care plan
  • You have been diagnosed with a rare or unusual cancer, or a cancer that is challenging to diagnose, grade or stage correctly
  • Your cancer is not responding to your current treatment
  • You have recurrent or metastatic cancer
  • You are considering a surgery, procedure or treatment that carries a degree of risk
  • You would like to become more involved and educated about your disease and treatment choices

Our physicians understand that patients may be seeking a second opinion for any of these reasons. We offer remote and in-person second opinions for all types of cancer.

Types of Second Opinions

For your convenience, UC San Diego Health offers several ways to get a second opinion about your cancer care.

In-Person Consult

Meet with an oncologist or surgeon with expertise in your particular cancer type to comprehensively review your health history and discuss treatment options. Depending on your health care plan, this may be covered by your insurance. Call 858-822-6100 for details.

Video Visit

Depending on your diagnosis, you may be able to receive a second opinion without leaving home. This may be covered by insurance, and we also offer a flat fee for cash pay patients. Call 858-822-6100 for details.

Why Get a Second Opinion at UC San Diego Health?

UC San Diego Health is the region's only federally recognized comprehensive cancer center. A second opinion with one of our cancer specialists is an opportunity to get expert input from a true cancer expert — so you feel more confident and comfortable with your next steps.

As part of an academic medical center, we can often offer experimental therapeutics and new cancer treatments, available only through participation in research studies or clinical trials. All of our physicians work as part of multidisciplinary teams that include surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists that are experts in particular cancer types.

Call 858-822-6100 for more information or to set up an appointment for a second opinion. We can help you select the right physician and give you instructions for sending or requesting your medical records, including scans and diagnostic results.
