Travel Medicine

Appointment Information

Our travel medicine services are only available to existing UC San Diego Health patients, and you must get a referral from your primary care physician to schedule an appointment.

You don't want your dream vacation to end up being a medical disaster.

Look to UC San Diego Health for destination-specific travel medicine because we're part of Global TravEpiNet (GTEN), a national network of clinics that works to improve the health of international travelers. The network is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel Medicine Consults

To prevent avoidable illness, you may schedule a pre-travel consult, which covers topics such as:

  • Food and water precautions
  • Malaria and other diseases spread by insect bites
  • Altitude sickness
  • Inoculations (Some may be required for entry into certain countries. Others are highly recommended.)
  • Drugs to prevent malaria, diarrhea and other diseases

You may also schedule a pre-travel exam and follow-up visits if you return home sick. Should you need specialized care, we can refer you to one of our infectious disease specialists.

For those traveling with children, we offer pediatric travel medicine

Vaccines for Travelers

Vaccines can protect you from diseases that may be common outside of the United States. Vaccines that may be recommended or required for travel include:

  • Cholera
  • Hepatitis A
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • Meningococcal meningitis
  • Rabies
  • Tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis

Note: Some immunizations require multiple injections and take weeks to reach full effectiveness. Please schedule your travel medicine appointment at least six weeks before your departure.
