UC San Diego Health Administrative Fellowship

The UC San Diego Health Administrative Fellowship is a one-year program, providing on-the-job training in skills and responsibilities required of an administrator at a major academic health system.

Reporting directly to the executive team, the fellow assumes increasing levels of responsibility by working with administrators and staff at all levels of the organization.

Fellowship Structure

The initial phase of the Fellowship consists of rotations under each member of the executive leadership team. Rotations are designed to educate and orient the Fellow to the functions and structure of the organization.

This allows the Fellow to experience and observe different managerial styles, understand the link between departments, and develop a better understanding of the diverse issues and challenges facing the health system.

Additionally, the Fellow will have the opportunity to meet with department managers and key faculty, and participate in committee meetings and councils.

Experiential Model

The feature that most distinguishes this program is the Fellow’s active, participatory role, including attending recurring executive meetings and leading strategic initiatives.

The Fellow plays a role of genuine importance, both in UC San Diego Health's day-to-day administrative operations and in the planning of its future. The individuals who complete an administrative fellowship at UC San Diego Health are in a unique position to gain entry into the field of healthcare administration and begin a dynamic career.
