Medi-Cal Plans
UC San Diego Medical Center and UC San Diego Medical Group accept Medi-Cal fee-for-service (FFS) and contracts with the following Medi-Cal managed care plans.
- Medi-Cal FFS – specialty referrals only, no primary care access
- Aetna Better Health (Medi-Cal)
– specialty referrals only, no primary care access
Note: This Medi-Cal coverage is NOT impacted by UC San Diego Health not being contracted with Aetna Commercial and Medicare plans after April 13, 2023.
- Anthem Blue Cross AIM (Access for Infants and Mothers) HMO
- California Health and Wellness
– specialty referrals only, no primary care access
- Blue Shield Promise Medi-Cal HMO (formerly Care 1st)
– specialty referrals; primary care limited to HIV patients only
- Community Health Group (CHG) Medi-Cal HMO
– specialty referrals only, no new primary care except pediatric patients through
UCSD Pediatric Associates
- Health Net
– specialty referrals only, no primary care access
- Inland Empire Health Plan – specialty referrals only, no primary care access
- Molina Medi-Cal – specialty referrals only, no primary care access
- UnitedHealthCare (will no longer an be option in 2023)

- SCAN Connections Cal MediConnect - primary and specialty care
- Community Health Group (CHG) CommuniCare Advantage Cal MediConnect - specialty referrals only, no new primary care;
- Molina Dual Options Cal MediConnect – specialty referrals only, no primary care access
- Blue Shield Promise Cal MediConnect - specialty referrals; primary care limited to HIV patients only
- Anthem MediBlue Coordination Plan Plus HMO - specialty referrals only, no primary care
UC San Diego Medical Center and UC San Diego Medical Group are contracted with most major insurance plans. If you do not see the name of your insurance plan listed above, and you require specialty care, see your primary care physician and request an authorization to UC San Diego for specialty services.
