August 13, 2009  |

Kellogg Parsons, MD, urologic oncologist at UC San Diego Medical Center and Moores UCSD Cancer Center, has recently received multiple recognitions for his leadership in the field of urology and cancer care. He has been appointed to the prestigious American Urological Association (AUA) Practice Guidelines Committee. Reaching a global community of physicians, the committee recommends specific indications, guidelines and practice parameters for diagnosis and treatment of urological diseases, outlining appropriate procedures for care. Parsons is currently their youngest member.

Parsons is a national expert in prostate cancer prevention

As a graduate of the 2009 AUA Leadership Program, Parsons was one of only two urologists the Western United States selected for this national training program. His paper, “Alcohol Consumption is Associated with Decreased Risk of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia” received second place in the American Urological Association National Clinical Research Contest and will be published later this year in The Journal of Urology.

“Dr. Parsons is a superb surgeon-scientist whose research into the causes, prevention and treatment of prostate cancer will have a profound impact on patient care in the coming years,” said Christopher Kane, MD, FACS, chief of urology at UC San Diego Medical Center. “He is one of the reasons that the urology program at UC San Diego Medical Center is top ranked by US News & World Report.”

Parsons’ clinical practice focuses on the minimally-invasive treatment of urological malignancies, including prostate, kidney, and bladder cancer. He has specialized training in minimally-invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques designed to reduce pain and speed recovery time. He is currently lead investigator of an NIH-funded pilot study called, “The Dietary Intervention for Bladder Cancer Study.”

Patients interested in meeting Parsons and a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists may attend a free community seminar on advances in treating prostate cancer on Thursday, September 17, 2009 from 6:30—8:00 pm at Moores UCSD Cancer Center. The seminar is being offered in recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. More information about the seminar may be obtained by calling 800-926-UCSD.
