At UC San Diego Health, we understand that menopause is more than just a phase — it's a significant life transition that can impact your physical, emotional and mental health. From hot flash relief to bone health and overall well-being, we provide personalized, evidence-based treatments to help you feel your best before, during and after menopause.

Pioneers in Menopause Health

UC San Diego Health was the first health system in San Diego to launch a program dedicated entirely to menopause care. The program gained new momentum in 2004 under the leadership of obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Kathryn Macaulay, who expanded it to meet the diverse needs of women through compassionate, research-driven care.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause marks the end of menstruation, typically between the ages of 45 and 55. It's officially diagnosed when you haven't had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months. This change happens as the ovaries gradually produce less hormones like estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Some women may experience menopause early due to premature ovarian failure, medical treatments like chemotherapy, or surgical removal of the ovaries.

Menopause symptoms can include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness or discomfort
  • Mood changes or irritability
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Changes in libido
  • Weight gain

When to See a Doctor

You don't have to wait until symptoms become severe. Whether you're going through natural, surgical or premature menopause, you'll receive care tailored to your unique needs.

Your journey begins with a comprehensive consultation, including a full review of your medical history, a physical exam (when indicated) and a discussion of your concerns and goals. Then, you'll work with a team of experts to create a care plan to manage your symptoms and support your health and well-being.
