Being recognized for quality patient care is a hospital's highest recognition. Recent awards and achievements for patient care include:

  • Top-ranked Specialty Care – Repeatedly ranked among the nation’s best in multiple adult medical and surgical specialties by U.S. News & World Report. Specialties listed in the top 50 nationally for 2019-20 include: Cardiology and Heart Surgery (No. 44); Geriatrics (No. 29); Neurology & Neurosurgery (No. 40); Pulmonology (No. 14). Only approximately 3.5 percent of the more than 4,500 hospitals included in the analysis ranked in even one specialty.
  • Outstanding Stroke Care – Earned the American Stroke Association’s "Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award" in 2018 and is listed on its "Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll" for the quality of its stroke care.
  • Excellence in Maternity Care – In 2018, the only health care system in the county to meet all the maternity care standards identified by The Leapfrog Group as indicative of quality maternal care
  • Information Technology to Enhance Patient Care and Comfort – Listed among "HealthCare’s Most Wired" hospital systems by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) in 2018.
  • LGBTQ Leader – Scored a perfect 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s LGBTQ Healthcare Equality rating for the second year straight in 2018.
  • "A" for Hospital Safety and 2018 Top Teaching Hospital – UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest earned top marks from The Leapfrog Group in 2019 for keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. It was also named a 2018 Top Teaching Hospital from The Leapfrog Group for its achievements in patient safety and quality.
  • Distinguished Hospital Award – For the fourth year straight, it received a Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence from Healthgrades in 2017, placing it among the top 5 percent of U.S. hospitals, based on objective clinical metrics. Patients who receive care at these hospitals have better outcomes and lower risk-adjusted complication rates for a range of conditions and procedures.
  • Nursing Excellence – Maintains Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, considered among the highest recognitions for nursing excellence and innovation in nursing practice
