Knee Replacement

At UC San Diego Health, you find surgeons with expertise and experience in total and partial knee replacement.

With a full spectrum of surgical options available to you, your surgeon can personalize your care plan to your health, lifestyle and individual preferences.

Orthopedic Expertise

UC San Diego Health is a Blue Distinction Center recognized for our treatment expertise and better overall patient results for knee replacement. We're also a designated Center of Excellence for orthopedic care by Optum. All this means you'll receive expert, safe and cost-effective care.

Customized Knee Replacements

Your UC San Diego Health surgeon is specially trained in techniques that allow him to customize your knee replacement to your joint. That customization — using the latest in imaging technology, three-dimensional modeling and surgical guides, and proven components — means better balance and alignment. With better fit and alignment, you may experience greater comfort, more natural knee movement and a potentially longer-lasting prosthetic knee.

Our muscle-sparing surgical techniques also help speed your recovery by reducing the impact to surrounding muscles and soft tissues. We understand the importance of pain management and post-surgical rehab to your recovery. Your rehab begins shortly after surgery with highly trained physical therapists.

Types of Total and Partial Knee Replacements

Each person's knee is different. This is why we offer several surgical approaches. Each has its benefits for the right person. Your surgeon can discuss what option is most appropriate for you. We offer:

  • Total knee replacement, manually performed
  • ROSA robotic knee system
  • Medial unicompartmental replacement (replacement of the inside part of the knee)
  • Lateral unicompartmental replacement (replacement of the outside part of the knee)
  • Patellofemoral unicompartmental replacement (replacement of the front part of the knee)
  • Complex revision knee replacement

ROSA Knee System

ROSA, which stands for Robotic Surgical Assistant, is an advanced technology that helps your surgeon perform total knee replacements with greater precision and accuracy.

More specifically, ROSA enables your surgeon to create a three-dimensional model of your knee using X-rays. This model lets your surgeon plan and virtually perform your knee replacement even before entering the operating room. During the procedure, your surgeon uses ROSA to monitor your leg alignment and ligament balance. This information helps to recreate the most functional knee for your particular anatomy.

In essence, ROSA enables a more personalized and precise knee replacement, allowing you to return to an active lifestyle without pain.

Knee Replacements without a Hospital Stay

With less invasive surgical techniques and better anesthesia, some patients may be able to go home within several hours of surgery. How well you are moving around before surgery — not age — is the best predictor for how quickly you will recover from surgery. If you are interested in an outpatient knee replacement, talk to your surgeon about whether it is a good option for you.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Your care team works closely with you before and after surgery to educate you about your surgery and the recovery process, including pain management. Physical therapy is key to allowing you to return to a more active lifestyle. UC San Diego Health orthopedic rehab specialists work with you one-on-one to develop an exercise routine that will help you regain knee function, strength and stability.
