If you have questions, call us at 858-657-8860.

Every year, more than 100,000 people in the U.S. undergo gastric bypass surgery for the treatment of obesity. After the procedure, most gastric bypass patients achieve excellent weight loss.

However, some patients regain weight years after their original bypass surgery. This is often caused by an enlargement of the stomach pouch.

There are options to surgical restore the stomach pouch to its original size after your bypass. At UC San Diego Health's Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, our care team utilizes a minimally invasive, laparoscopic approach to perform gastric bypass revision surgery.

Are You a Candidate For Gastric Bypass Revision Surgery?

You may be an ideal candidate if you:

  • Were originally successful with your bypass surgery but now find yourself regaining some of your lost weight
  • Underwent bypass surgery but did not lose weight

You should also contact your insurance company to find out their policies on gastric bypass revision surgery as this procedure may not be covered.

BMI Calculator

Ideal body weight for your height should result in a BMI between 19 and 24.9. If your BMI is above 30, you may be a good candidate for surgery. Understand your BMI.
