Hearing and Balance Specialists

Hearing and balance are closely connected functions of the inner ear.

Our otologists and audiologists provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, specialized surgical and medical treatment, and a variety of assistive technologies for hearing loss, ear diseases and balance-related disorders.

Hearing and Balance Disorders Treated

Our otolaryngology specialists work together to compassionately evaluate and treat all types of hearing and balance problems. They have experience in both common and rare conditions, including:

Non-Surgical Treatments

If you have a balance disorder, your care will likely include vestibular exercise, a type of physical therapy that helps you regain balance. Dietary changes and certain medications may also be recommended.

For those with unresolved hearing loss, assistive hearing devices may be recommended in certain situations to help with a person's specific needs, including:

  • Amplified telephones and answering machines
  • Wake-up alarms that vibrate
  • Loud door bells

Read more about these devices and others through audiology services.

Head and Neck Surgery to Restore Hearing and Balance

Our ENT surgeons offer advanced microsurgery, minimally invasive surgery, and complex open surgeries to restore hearing loss caused by:

  • Tumors, including acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas)
  • Trauma
  • Perforation of the eardrum
  • Congenital malformations, such as congenital aural atresia repairs and otosclerosis
  • The ossicles (three bones in the middle ear)
  • Chronic ear infections (See: mastoidectomies)

We are a regional referral center for complex surgeries to restore hearing and balance.

Comprehensive Cochlear Implant Program

UC San Diego Health operates the largest cochlear implant program in the region. Our team includes several cochlear implant surgeons and cochlear implant audiologists.
