UC San Diego Health is home to the most experienced team in the world for treating chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).
We are one of the few centers in the U.S. that can perform both PTE surgery and BPA procedures with excellent outcomes.
CTEPH, which is a type of pulmonary hypertension, is often misdiagnosed. Diagnosing CTEPH is challenging because the symptoms come on gradually and are often mistaken for other common heart–lung conditions, physical decline, or the natural effects of aging. Many patients don't get the right diagnosis until they've seen multiple doctors and have been living with worsening symptoms. UC San Diego Health experts in pulmonology, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and chest radiology work together to provide an accurate diagnosis and deliver the most advanced, personalized care to meet your unique needs.

UC San Diego Health joined the San Diego Padres in recognizing Dionne Taylor and bringing awareness to CTEPH and PTE surgery.
The good news is that CTEPH can often be cured with proper treatment from highly experienced specialists. Early treatment can make a big difference in patient outcomes.
The CTEPH treatment journey includes these steps:
"Your care, skills, knowledge, compassion and support proved to make a complicated surgery much easier than we ever could have imagined! Now, just three months post-surgery, the change in my daily life is nothing short of a miracle."
Jennifer Mullinix, PTE Patient, Georgia
As an academic medical center, we are active in research that helps advance the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary vascular disease. This includes offering a variety of clinical trials for appropriate patients. If you are interested, talk to your doctor for more information about these trials. UC San Diego Health is an internationally recognized center for pulmonary hypertension and actively participates in clinical trials, which expands your treatment options.
"I am back to running two to three miles and working out three to four days a week. From beginning to end, the process was seamless. My experience at UC San Diego Health was beyond what I had expected. I would highly recommend others to come here for their care."
Christopher Dawdy, BPA Patient, Colorado
