CTEPH Program

UC San Diego Health is home to the most experienced team in the world for treating chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).

We are one of the few centers in the U.S. that can perform both PTE surgery and BPA procedures with excellent outcomes.

Choose UC San Diego Health for Superior CTEPH Care

  • We treat more patients than any other center in the U.S.: We have performed more than 5,000 PTE surgeries and more than 1,000 BPA procedures with excellent success rates — even for the most complex cases.
  • We offer both PTE surgery and BPA procedures: We're one of the few centers in the U.S. to perform a high volume of both treatments. We were also the first to be nationally designated as a Center of Excellence by the American College of Chest Physicians.
  • We have 55 years of experience: We pioneered PTE surgery and continue to set the global standards for CTEPH treatment to ensure all patients get the best care.
  • We have a multidisciplinary team of experts: Our patients receive care from surgeons, cardiologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, physicians and nurse practitioners. We take a holistic approach to determining the best treatment plan for each individual.

Why You Need an Expert Diagnosis

CTEPH, which is a type of pulmonary hypertension, is often misdiagnosed. Diagnosing CTEPH is challenging because the symptoms come on gradually and are often mistaken for other common heart–lung conditions, physical decline, or the natural effects of aging. Many patients don't get the right diagnosis until they've seen multiple doctors and have been living with worsening symptoms. UC San Diego Health experts in pulmonology, cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and chest radiology work together to provide an accurate diagnosis and deliver the most advanced, personalized care to meet your unique needs.

Our CTEPH Treatments

The good news is that CTEPH can often be cured with proper treatment from highly experienced specialists. Early treatment can make a big difference in patient outcomes.

Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) Surgery

  • PTE surgery removes chronic blood clots from the blood vessels in the lungs, improving blood flow. It's an extremely safe procedure.
  • PTE surgery is the most successful form of treatment for CTEPH, often reversing heart failure.
  • Our experts have successfully performed this surgery more than 5,000 times — more than any other medical center in the world.

Balloon Pulmonary Angioplasty (BPA)

  • BPA is a minimally invasive procedure for CTEPH patients who are not good candidates for surgery or who have residual pulmonary hypertension.
  • BPA uses balloons to open blood vessels that have been chronically narrowed or blocked, restoring blood flow to the lungs and improving quality of life.
  • Our experts have successfully performed this procedure more than 1,000 times.
