PET/CT & Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine plays a vital role in diagnosing cancer, heart disease and other serious conditions.

It includes advanced imaging techniques such as positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), which use small amounts of radioactive material to capture detailed images of how your organs and tissues are functioning.

Unlike traditional imaging, these scans can detect abnormalities at the cellular level, often before structural changes appear, helping your care team make earlier and more accurate diagnoses.

Common Uses for PET/CT and Nuclear Medicine

  • Detecting and staging cancer
  • Evaluating heart function
  • Assessing brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease
  • Examining thyroid and other endocrine conditions

Preparing for Your PET/CT Scan

Fasting: Do not eat for 4 to 6 hours before your scan.

Hydration: Drink water to stay hydrated unless instructed otherwise.

Clothing: Wear comfortable clothes with no metal zippers, buttons or snaps.

After Your PET/CT Scan

You may be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to help flush the tracer from your system. Most of the radioactive material will leave your body within a few hours.
