Why Choose UC San Diego Health for Breast Imaging?

We are recognized by the American College of Radiology as a Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center — an honor awarded to fewer than 6% of breast imaging centers in California. This designation reflects our expertise in screening, diagnostics and image-guided procedures.

Types of Breast Imaging

  • Mammography: Uses low-dose X-rays for routine breast cancer screening
  • Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to assess breast lumps and dense tissue
  • MRI: Produces detailed images, especially helpful for high-risk patients
  • Molecular breast imaging: Uses a small amount of tracer and a special camera to detect abnormalities, often used as an alternative to MRI

Common Uses

Breast imaging may be used for:

Preparing for Your Breast Imaging

  • Skip Deodorant: Avoid wearing deodorant, powders or lotions on the day of your mammogram.
  • Clothing: Wear a two-piece outfit to make it easy to remove your top.

After Your Exam

A radiologist will review your images, and your doctor will share the results. If anything unusual is found, follow-up tests may be recommended.

Image-Guided Procedures and Biopsies

If imaging reveals a suspicious area, your doctor may recommend additional testing.

Biopsy

A small sample of breast tissue or fluid is taken using image guidance and examined under a microscope to confirm whether the cells are cancerous or benign.

Ductography

This specialized X-ray exam is used to investigate unexplained nipple discharge by injecting contrast dye into the breast ducts to visualize abnormalities.

Localization for Surgery

Radiologists may use a wire, needle or wireless marker to guide surgeons to the exact location of a tumor, helping ensure complete removal while preserving appearance. UC San Diego Health was the first in the region to offer wireless localization.

Testing for Hereditary Breast Cancer

Learn About Your Risk

Up to 10% of all breast cancers are caused by inherited genetic changes or mutations. Mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are understood to be responsible for most cases of inherited breast cancer. UC San Diego Health offers genetic testing to identify BRCA and other inherited gene mutations. Testing can be completed with a simple blood draw or oral swab.

WISDOM Study: Personalized Prevention

Should everyone get a mammogram every year, or should screening be tailored to individual risk factors? The WISDOM Study aims to answer this vital question — and help save lives that could be lost to breast cancer.

UC San Diego Health is partnering in this groundbreaking research to eliminate the confusion surrounding breast cancer screening. The study compares two safe, proven approaches: annual mammography and personalized screening based on genetic testing and individual risk.
