Prenatal Care for Twins, Triplets and Other Multiples

Triplets

If you’re pregnant with twins, triplets or even more, you’ll need special prenatal care. Our team of specialists wants to make sure you and your babies get the best health care possible and have a safe delivery.

Preparing for Multiples

While most multiple pregnancies result in healthy babies, some have complications, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and placental issues. Multiples can also be at increased risk for preterm birth.

Working with our specialists can decrease the risk of complications and make it more likely you'll carry your babies to term.

If you're pregnant with multiples, schedule an appointment with our perinatologists. They are obstetricians/gynecologists who are board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine with advanced training and experience in high-risk pregnancies.

Specialized Care

Women pregnant with multiples need specialized care, so we offer:

  • Personalized prenatal care throughout your pregnancy with our expert perinatologists
  • Frequent ultrasounds during pregnancy and nonstress testing at end of pregnancy
  • Monitoring for complications, such as hypertension and preeclampsia, and prompt intervention and coordinated care for complications
  • Delivery planning and an on-site Level III NICU at Jacobs Medical Center, just in case your babies need extra care

Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome

UC San Diego Health's fetal surgery program is nationally recognized and provides a potentially lifesaving treatment for identical twins with a rare but serious complication called twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS), when blood flow moves from one twin to the other.
