UC San Diego Health pediatricians and adolescent medicine practitioners offer compassionate primary care for infants, children and teenagers, through all their developmental stages, in a supportive, family-friendly environment.
Primary Care from Birth to Age 21
As primary care practitioners, our expertise is preventive medicine and chronic disease management. Through our affiliation with the nearby Rady Children's Hospital, however, we offer families direct access to, and coordinated care with, nationally recognized pediatric specialists. It's a win-win for the whole family.
Infants and Toddlers
Prenatal consultations: Your child’s health and well-being begins before birth. A prenatal consultation is an opportunity to ask questions and learn, and select a pediatrician who is right for your family.
Well-baby care: We provide all necessary immunizations and developmental screenings, perform circumcision and frenectomy (release of tongue-tie), and can treat jaundice, feeding problems and respiratory issues.
In most cases, we offer same-day and next-day appointments for fever, respiratory or ear infections, rash and other conditions.
Lactation support: Our pediatricians can provide support for breastfeeding mothers. We are also associated with the
Premature Infant Nutrition Clinic, which helps mothers provide the optimal nutrition for premature infants who have recovered from intensive care.
Well-child care includes annual school and sports physicals, all necessary immunizations and developmental screenings.
If your child has a chronic condition such as cystic fibrosis, diabetes, congenital heart disease, asthma or gastrointestinal conditions, we can coordinate his or her care with pediatric subspecialists, explain and discuss all diagnostic reports and doctors’ notes, and work with you to tailor a health plan that is appropriate and workable for the entire family. We may also refer you to a
developmental-behavioral pediatrician for evaluation and treatment of ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder) or learning difficulties.
In most cases, we offer same-day and next-day appointments for infections, headache, injuries, gastrointestinal issues, urinary tract infections and other conditions.
Adolescents / Teens
Young people ages 12 to 21 may continue to see their pediatrician or transition to an adolescent medicine doctor. These physicians are specialized in addressing the mood swings, body changes and complex social dynamics often experienced during the teen years.
Whichever choice you make, our primary care physicians will help your adolescent navigate this challenging period, with the goal of establishing good mental and physical health habits to last a lifetime.
We also provide gynecologic care, including contraception, and have experience broaching sensitive yet important topics for this age group, including body-image issues, substance abuse and good hygiene.
