When to Consider Surgery

Our Care Location

Urinary obstructions and disorders can cause problems with urinary control and sexual function, leading to pain and discomfort and affecting your regular activities. If left untreated, it could lead to complications like urinary tract infection, incontinence, bladder infection or genital cancer.

If medications or other conservative approaches don’t work, you may require more advanced care, including reconstructive surgery. Talk to your UC San Diego Health urologist about treatment options and regaining a sense of normalcy in your life.

Conditions We Treat

Our reconstructive urologists offer innovative treatments for a variety of genitourinary conditions, including:

  • Enlarged Prostate / BPH: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlargement of the prostate gland, is a common non-cancerous condition in men over 50. Learn more about BPH
  • Hypospadias: This is a common birth defect where the opening of the urethra in males is on the underside of the penis instead of at the tip. The result is a penis that doesn't function well or have a normal appearance. Learn more about hypospadias
  • Peyronie's disease: This disorder results from scar tissue forming inside the penis, causing curved and often painful erections. Learn more about Peyronie's disease
  • Traumatic urological injuries: These are injuries from traumatic events, such as a car crash, to the urinary tract and its organs — kidneys, bladder, urethra, ureters, external genitalia and testes.
  • Urethral strictures/obstructions: Scar tissue can form in the urethra, narrowing the tube in a condition called a urethral stricture or obstruction. This can make it difficult to urinate and cause pain.
  • Urinary complications after prostate cancer therapy: This can cause urinary complications such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction and rectourethral fistulas. Learn more about prostate cancer
  • Urinary tract fistulas: A fistula is a connection or hole that forms between two organs. We treat rectourethral fistulas, also known as urinary rectal fistulas, between the urethra and the rectum, and urethral fistulas within the urinary tract.

Procedures We Offer

Our team has expertise in surgical therapies that decrease pain and restore the functioning of the lower urinary tract, helping you resume your normal activities and enjoy a healthy life.

  • Hypospadias repair surgery: This procedure is used to correct a birth defect in the opening of the penis or repair complications arising from prior hypospadias repair.
  • Plication: This surgery helps straighten a curvature in the penis by removing accumulated plaque or scar tissue around the organ.
  • Penile device implantation: A device that helps straighten the penis during erection is implanted into the penis to help patients who have Peyronie's disease or erectile dysfunction.
  • Penile grafting surgery: The plaque or scar tissue on the penis is removed and replaced with a graft of synthetic or biological material to correct the penile curvature formed by Peyronie's disease.
  • Urethroplasty: This surgery is used to treat and remove urethral strictures. The surgeon removes or widens the narrowed section of the urethra, which makes it easier to urinate. Learn more about urethroplasty

Minimally Invasive Approach

At UC San Diego Health, we know that you’re dealing with conditions that can be deeply personal and private. So we understand the importance of urology treatments that are as noninvasive and efficient at possible.

Our experts are trained in using robotically assisted and minimally invasive techniques that can reduce blood loss, reduce pain and speed recovery. We offer these options when conservative approaches do not resolve your condition or health concern.
