Ultrasound
What Is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the inside of the body. This safe, noninvasive test is commonly used to examine abdominal organs, monitor pregnancy and evaluate blood flow.
Advanced Option: Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS)
UC San Diego Health also offers contrast-enhanced ultrasound, which uses microbubbles to improve image clarity and highlight areas of interest. This technique provides high-resolution, real-time imaging without radiation or traditional contrast agents. CEUS is safe for patients with kidney or liver conditions, allergies to CT or MRI dyes or claustrophobia. It is especially helpful when other imaging tests yield inconclusive results.
What to Expect During Ultrasound
A technician applies a special gel to your skin and uses a handheld device called a transducer to send sound waves into your body. The sound waves bounce off internal structures, creating images on a monitor. The procedure is painless and typically takes 20 to 45 minutes.
Common Uses
Ultrasound may be used to evaluate:
- Pregnancy and fetal development
- Abdominal organs such as the liver, kidneys, and gallbladder
- Blood flow and circulation
- Thyroid gland function
Preparing for Your Ultrasound
Your preparation instructions will depend on the type of ultrasound you’re having:
Hydration: You may be asked to drink water beforehand, especially for pelvic exams.
Fasting: For abdominal ultrasounds, you may need to avoid food and drink for several hours.
After Your Ultrasound
There is no recovery time. You can return to your normal activities immediately.
