X-Rays
What Is an X-Ray?
An X-ray is a quick and efficient imaging technique that uses low-dose radiation to capture images of the body’s internal structures, especially bones and joints. X-rays are often the first diagnostic tool used to detect fractures and other bone abnormalities.
Common Uses for X-rays
- Diagnosing bone fractures
- Detecting joint abnormalities
- Chest imaging for pneumonia
- Dental evaluations
What to Expect During Your X-Ray
During the exam, you’ll be positioned so that the area being examined is between the X-ray machine and a digital detector. A small amount of radiation passes through the body to create an image. The process is fast, typically just a few minutes.
Preparing for Your X-ray
Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes without metal, or you may be asked to wear a gown.
Jewelry: Remove any metal objects that could interfere with the image.
After Your X-ray
X-rays are noninvasive and require no recovery time. You can resume normal activities right away.
X-Ray Locations and Hours
If you've been referred to Radiology for X-rays, you can walk in or make an appointment at any of our locations listed below. Certain types of X-rays, however, need to be scheduled. Before arriving for a walk-in exam, please call the location to ensure an appointment is not required.
All X-ray locations are closed on university-observed holidays, except for César Chávez Day. (See a list of holiday closures.)
